The Edition XS represents a watershed moment for HiFiMAN, effectively trickling down the high-end DNA of the Arya into a significantly more accessible price bracket. The standout feature here is the sheer scale of the presentation; thanks to the massive egg-shaped drivers and Stealth Magnet technology, the soundstage possesses a verticality and depth that few competitors in the mid-fi realm can touch. Sonically, it is remarkably linear. The bass extends deep into the sub-frequencies with typical planar speed and texture, while the mids remain transparent, if slightly lean in the lower-mid transition.
However, the trade-off for this world-class resolution often comes in build refinement. While the padded headband is a plush departure from the older suspension designs, the lack of horizontal cup swivel can make achieving a perfect seal difficult for those with narrower heads. The construction feels somewhat utilitarian and plastic-heavy compared to the luxury materials found in European rivals. Nevertheless, for the critical listener or home studio engineer who prioritizes transient response and pinpoint imaging over premium aesthetics, the XS is a masterclass in value. It requires a dedicated amplifier to truly open up, but once properly powered, it delivers a level of transparency that punchily challenges headphones twice its cost.
