Lyon & Healy's entry-level 34-string lever harp with laminated maple body and Truitt levers, offering full chromatic capability at an accessible price.
The Ravenna 34 occupies a vital space in the Lyon & Healy lineup, offering their signature precision in a package that prioritizes durability and projection. While some purists shy away from laminated construction, the use of laminated maple here is a masterstroke for stability. It creates a rigid, resonant box that handles humidity fluctuations far better than solid wood, making it an ideal 'workhorse' for students or gigging musicians in unpredictable environments.
Sonically, the Ravenna 34 leans toward a bright, articulate character with a focused fundamental. It lacks the complex, dark overtones found in the more expensive Troubadour series, but its clarity is an asset for learners needing to hear every note of a passage. The Loveland levers are standard and reliable, providing clean half-step transitions with minimal buzz. String tension is medium-high"reminiscent of a pedal harp"which is excellent for building finger strength and facilitating an eventual transition to larger instruments.
The ergonomics are well-thought-out; the inclusion of the staved back makes it comfortable against the shoulder, and the optional leg/stand system is remarkably stable. The trade-off for its ruggedness is a slightly more 'linear' tone that some may find less 'soulful' for folk genres, but for classical repertoire and general study, its consistency and build quality are virtually unmatched in this price bracket.
